The word went out in ebbs and tides,
Murky rumors did abound;
Dead fish left their muddy banks,
'Neath the moon the tide did sweep
None the deader for the trip
Fish deceased for months and weeks,
Fish from Spain and Singapore
Mackerel sporting swallowed hooks.
Cans releasing dead sardines.
Halibut and rainbow trout
Sunfish spotted with disease.
Soon the last had straggled in,
Then a hush subdued the crowd
Competition mounted thick.
Mobs of urchins got in tiffs
Like a lofty magistrate
"I'm to choose the honoree,
Eyes were on him, hard and long.
"Many moons and stars ago
Fish alive! Robust and strong!
By the plankton on my shell,
I would crown the brightest tail, BUT...
Now we're here, oh friends of mine,
"Tell us why we all are dead,"
This I tell you with a frown;
Factories ruined every creek
If they halted, surely then
Urchins bubbled their applause. THEN...
One by one and two by two
To the corners of the earth;
There they rested on the sand
There they lie this very morn

NOTE: I am currently seeking an illustrator for collaboration on a second print edition of this children's picture book, with hopes of any improvement at all over the miserably lame illustrations in the first edition (not shown here, for good reason). If you're an illustrator and would be interested in talking about a possible collaboration, feel free to contact me. |
